Parallel overlays for high data-rate multicast data transfer

چکیده
Recently a number of application-layer multicast (ALM) protocols have been proposed as a promising alternative to deploying multicast services in the unicast-only Internet. Current ALM protocols work very well for low data-rate applications but can suffer from link-level load imbalance, and consequently link congestions, when applied to high data-rate applications. This work addresses this problem by extending the well-known NICE protocol to use multiple parallel overlays in the same ALM session to spread the data traffic across more available network links, and thus leading to significantly improved performance. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed protocol can support three times the data-rate compared to NICE and yet can reduce the end-to-end data delivery delay by more than 50%. 2006 Elsevier B.V. Efficient Multicast Flow Control using Multiple Multicast Groups
Controlling the rate of multicast data transfer to a large number of receivers is difficult, due to the heterogeneity among the end-systems’ capabilities and their available network bandwidth. If the data transfer rate is too high, certain receivers will lose data, and retransmissions will be required. If the data transfer rate is too slow, an inordinate amount of time will be required to trans...

متن کاملTowards Deployable Large Scale End-point-based Multicast Streaming
Peer-to-peer overlays have proved to be an efficient means for off-line content distribution between a large number of cooperative nodes. There are several overlays coexisting in the Internet and serve the needs of millions of users. Peerto-peer overlays are also used to provide lookup services in commercial applications, such as Skype. But the peer-to-peer paradigm has not been that successful...
متن کاملSAAR: A Shared Control Plane for Overlay Multicast
Many cooperative overlay multicast systems of diverse designs have been implemented and deployed. In this paper, we explore a new architecture for overlay multicast: we factor out the control plane into a separate overlay that provides a single primitive: a configurable anycast for peer selection. This separation of control and data overlays has several advantages. Data overlays can be optimize...
متن کاملExploiting parallelism in the design of peer-to-peer overlays
Many peer-to-peer overlay operations are inherently parallel and this parallelism can be exploited by using multi-destination multicast routing, resulting in significant message reduction in the underlying network. We propose criteria for assessing when multicast routing can effectively be used, and compare multi-destination multicast and host group multicast using these criteria. We show that ...
